On the 4th May 1985, exactly 40 years ago. George Michael performed at the 50th Anniversary of the historic Apollo Theatre in Harlem, New York City. It was billed as "Motown Returns To The Apollo" the show featured a wide spectrum of pop, soul and jazz representage the best Motown talent and pop luminares over last 50 years. The show was aired as a three hours television special on the NBC network on May 19. The proceeds from the show had gone to Afri-Care, a group dedicated to feeding the hungry in Ethiopia. Many artists of the black community made part of this show, like Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross, Patti LaBelle, James Brown, Smokey Robinson and many others. Bill Crosby served as a master host for the show. At only 21 years old George was one of the three white artists who were invited alongside Boy George and Rod Stewart. George said about it that he felt privileged and it was as some of encouragement for him to be one of those three white artists to be involved making part of the show. That night George sang two songs "Careless Whisper" with Smokey Robinson, and "Love's In Need Of Love Today" with Stevie Wonder. At that time George was considered a young teenager Singer as part of Wham and lots of people were surprised and wondering what was he doing there in the middle of such great legends of the soul music. George proved everyone that he wasn't only a young singer, but he was very professional and with his magical and powerful voice he could do duets with any artist and make it the best, even with two legends like Stevie Wonder and Smokey Robinson and be on the same level of them. In these two duets their voices complimented each other and that was really amazing. George had the respect of the black community because they understood that George had a rare talent, he wrote, produced and arranged all his music. Not other artists could do that especially at 21 years old. George remains one of the the best songwriters and singers of our generation. #georgemichael #fyp #💜💜💜💜
