Let’s talk 3 Tips For Genuinely Accepting A Compliment Like A Leader.
If you're the person who cringes, deflects or shies away from a simple THANK YOU when someone offers you a compliment, then these tips are for you.
Hi, I’m Mel - I’m an exec coach for pre-executives who want to be better leaders in their career. If that’s you - then make sure you give me a follow.
Here are three tips to accept a compliment like a leader.
1 - STOP TAKING IT PERSONALLY. The reason you find it difficult to take a compliment is because you’re taking it personally. Whether someone says something positive or negative to you, if you take it personally it can get messy and awkward. So instead of making it about you - make it about the work you do.
2 - RECIPROCATION IS NOT NECESSARY. Just because someone said something nice to you doesn’t mean you have to compliment them. Plus it feels disingenuous if you’re only doing it because they said something nice to you. You can appreciate them by simply saying “I appreciate you saying that, thank you AND THEN MOVE ON…
3 - PAY IT FORWARD. You don’t always have to mention the whole team the moment you get a compliment It’s not selfish to just say ‘thanks’. AND you can ALSO share the compliment with the team in an email later, and copy the person who gave it to you so they can be the hero.

·18h ago You’re in the room. You’re speaking up. But your words aren’t landing. You’re showing up prepared. You’re delivering your ideas. But somehow, it’s still not landing the way it should. And when you speak, it feels like you’re pulling your punches, softening your words to avoid conflict or judgment. People trust people with conviction. If you don’t own your authority, it shows. - Hesitation sounds like doubt. - Qualifying your words makes you sound uncertain. - And when you sound uncertain, people question your authority—even when you know what you’re talking about. ✅ Executive presence is about speaking with conviction. ✅ When you do that, your words carry weight—every single time. 👉 DM READY to book your free strategy session to see if executive coaching is right for you. ➡️ Follow @leadershipmel for more tips on how to be a high-impact leader #leadershiptok #leadership #bealeader #corporatetok #leadershipskills #executivecoach #corporatelife #successincorporate #LeadershipDevelopment #HighValueLeader #WorkSmarterNotHarder #LeadWithIntention #TimeSavvyLeaders #ProductivityForLeaders #ExecutivePresence #LeadershipMindset #ManagementTips #worklife #ExecutiveMindset #leadershiptips

·1d ago You need to hear this … The only reason what your boss said hurt is because, deep down, part of you agrees with it. 💡 It’s worth remembering, feedback isn’t about who you are; it’s about where you can grow. Try this to process it and move forward: 1️⃣ Pause before reacting. Take a moment to breathe and separate your emotions from their words. This helps you gain clarity. 2️⃣ Look for the lesson. Ask yourself, “Is there truth in what they’re saying? What can I learn from this?” 3️⃣ Own your growth. Growth doesn’t mean agreeing with everything—it means taking what’s useful and letting the rest go. ✨ Even if your boss did a terrible job with offering the feedback, there’s probably something important in there to take away. Focus on the essence, not the delivery. ✨ What feedback hit you hard because part of you believed it? ➡️ Follow @leadershipmel for more tips on stepping into your leadership potential! #leadershiptok #corporatetok #leadership #bealeader #leadershipskills #executivecoach #corporatelife #successincorporate #LeadershipDevelopment #HighValueLeader #WorkSmarterNotHarder #LeadWithIntention #TimeSavvyLeaders #ProductivityForLeaders #ExecutivePresence #LeadershipMindset #ManagementTips #worklife #ExecutiveMindset #leadershiptips

·1w ago Which two would you choose? Can I be honest with you? I would pick #2 in an INSTANT because being able to separate my work from my worth accelerates my ability to be a great leader, and helps me build strong relationships with even the most challenging stakeholders. And my second pick is #4 because bosses come and go, but when you have a strong, supported brand in your company - nobody can touch you. 🚀 DM 👉 LEADER and I’ll send you a link to my free training “How to become the highly valued leader everyone wants on their team”. ➡️ Follow @leadershipmel for more tips on how to be a highly valued leader #leadershiptok #corporatetok #leadership #bealeader #leadershipskills #executivecoach #corporatelife #successincorporate #LeadershipDevelopment #HighValueLeader #WorkSmarterNotHarder #LeadWithIntention #TimeSavvyLeaders #ProductivityForLeaders #ExecutivePresence #LeadershipMindset #ManagementTips #worklife #ExecutiveMindset #leadershiptips

·7-24The Higher You Climb in Leadership, the Less Control You Actually Have… Here’s Why 👇 One of the most surprising (and frustrating) things leaders face as they grow is this: You thought leadership meant more autonomy. More say. More control over decisions. But instead… 👎 More people question your ideas 👎 More opinions come out of the woodwork 👎 More alignment is needed before anything moves forward It feels like you have less power, not more. Here’s the truth: As you grow, leadership is less about making decisions on your own… And more about building alignment with the people who matter. That means managing up, across, and all around the org. You now have MORE stakeholders who need to buy into what you’re doing. Not because you’re doing it wrong—because this is the job now. 🛑 So stop waiting for the day when you get to make decisions in a vacuum. ✅ Start focusing on how to understand your audience ✅ Create influence ✅ Build alignment based on what THEY need to hear ✅ And move things forward through trust and collaboration—not control That’s what senior leadership really looks like. 👉 DM READY to book your free strategy session to see if executive coaching is right for you. ➡️ Follow @leadershipmel for more tips on how to be a high-impact leader #leadershiptok #corporatetok #leadership #bealeader #leadershipskills #executivecoach #corporatelife #successincorporate #LeadershipDevelopment #HighValueLeader #WorkSmarterNotHarder #LeadWithIntention #worklife #TimeSavvyLeaders #ProductivityForLeaders #ExecutivePresence #LeadershipMindset #ManagementTips #ExecutiveMindset

·7-14Here’s a secret… Even the most confident leaders feel self-doubt. The difference? They don’t let it define them. So many leaders tell me the same thing… They tell me they want to be more confident. But what they don’t often consider is how confident they already are! Just because you’re not confident 100% of the time, in every situation, doesn’t mean you’re not a confident leader. Instead of waiting to feel 100% confident, try this: 1️⃣ Call yourself a confident leader—who sometimes has doubts. Confidence isn’t about never questioning yourself, it’s about moving forward anyway. 2️⃣ Recognize doubt as a growth signal. If you never feel unsure, you’re not stretching yourself enough. 3️⃣ Take action despite discomfort. The fastest way to build real confidence is proving to yourself that you can handle hard things. Self-doubt isn’t a sign you’re failing—it’s a sign you’re leveling up. ·7-13Don’t believe it! On the way up the corporate ladder, you’ll hear a lot of “advice”—but much of it holds you back more than it helps. Here are five lies I no longer believe as a seasoned leader… and here’s why: ❌ The work will speak for itself → Your impact is only as visible as your ability to communicate it. Leaders who advocate for their contributions create more opportunities. ❌ Don’t rock the boat → Change doesn’t happen in silence. Thoughtful challenge is how leaders earn respect and drive progress. ❌ Professionalism is unemotional → Emotional intelligence is professionalism. The best leaders show up with presence, empathy, and authenticity. ❌ It takes two to make a relationship work → You can’t control others—but you can control how you let them affect you. The way you think and feel about someone shapes the relationship more than their behavior does. ❌ Hard work = long hours → The best leaders know that value matters more than volume. Sustainable success comes from working smarter, not endlessly. Which of these lies have you had to unlearn? ➡️ Follow @leadershipmel for more tips on how to be a highly valued leader #leadershiptok #corporatetok #leadership #bealeader #leadershipskills #executivecoach #corporatelife #successincorporate #LeadershipDevelopment #HighValueLeader #WorkSmarterNotHarder #LeadWithIntention #worklife #TimeSavvyLeaders #ProductivityForLeaders #ExecutivePresence #LeadershipMindset #ManagementTips #ExecutiveMindset #timemanagement

·7-3It has to stop! You spend all day solving problems. Boom, boom, boom—one after another. And not only is it exhausting… it’s stressful too. Because you’re constantly hoping you’ve landed on the right solution. But working this way isn’t sustainable—and it’s probably making your job harder. If you feel like a problem-solving machine, here’s why that’s creating an even bigger problem: 1️⃣ It’s mentally and emotionally draining for you. 2️⃣ You’re training your team to depend on you instead of thinking for themselves. 3️⃣ You’re slowing everything down because all decisions have to go through you. So how do you fix this? Next time your team comes to you with a question, practice speaking in strategies and let your team come up with the tactics. Instead of saying “Go to this person and ask them this”… say “It sounds like we need to rally support—how do you want to do that?” Instead of saying “We should set up a meeting and here’s who you should invite”… say “Sounds like we need to create alignment—how do you want to do that?” Keep your solutions broad. Let your team own the specifics. That’s how you build a team that thinks for themselves.

·7-2Here’s the hidden secret for transitioning from doer to leader… You need a completely different value strategy as a leader than had as a doer. ·6-28I totally get it. You got promoted into leadership because you were a great problem solver. That’s how you create value. So naturally, you want to do the same for your team. But the truth is… they don’t see it as valuable. In fact, now that you're a leader, constantly solving their problems for them is actually selfish. Because instead of helping them grow, you’re fulfilling your own need to be valuable. And ironically - the longer you micromanage them, the less valuable you become. 💯 So if you want to break the micromanaging habit, I suggest you start by NO LONGER SOLVING PROBLEMS FOR YOUR PEOPLE Instead - help them solve their own problems by helping them explore the problem and find their own solutions. You do that by asking questions… but not just ANY QUESTIONS. You do that by asking them the questions you would normally ask yourself when you solve problems. Here are three steps you can follow (and a bonus tip) when your team comes to you with a problem 1️⃣ Make sure you clearly understand the problem. Help them cut through all the background and BS and clearly state what the problem is and what they’d like to see happen instead (aka their goal) 2️⃣ Ask them the questions you’d normally ask yourself You’re a master problem-solver, so let’s put that to use. Instead of telling them what to do, ask them the questions you’d normally ask yourself. 3️⃣ Ask them what they need from you Once you’ve helped them come up with an initial game plan, ask them if they need anything from you. It’s a great way to reinforce you’re willing to support them if they need you. 💪 BONUS TIP: Keep your team member in the driver’s seat! They’ve come to you for help, but let them maintain the power. It helps them feel accountable. Remember, you’re the one in the passenger seat helping them navigate, but they’re the ones driving the car! 👉 Let me know in the comments the one thing you struggle to let go of as a leader. #LeadershipDevelopment #CriticalThinking #TeamBuilding #ExecutiveCoaching #LeadershipTips #micromanaging #workplacesuccess #SuccessMindset

·6-24It makes sense—you were rewarded for being exceptional at execution. So, of course, you want your team to do things the right way (aka your way). But leadership isn’t about controlling how people work. It’s about guiding them toward their own best way of working. 👉 Here’s a small mindset shift that changes everything: ✨ Your greatest leadership skill isn’t doing the work—it’s using your execution experience to teach, coach, and develop others. ✨ The more you let go of how things get done, the stronger your team becomes. 🔥 Try these actionable steps to build this habit … 1️⃣ Notice when you want to jump in and “fix” things—pause instead. 2️⃣ Ask yourself: *How can I use my experience to help them find their own solution?* 3️⃣ Shift from telling to asking. Instead of giving the answer, ask them the same questions you’d ask yourself to solve the problem. 💡 Bonus Tip: Their work won’t be as good as yours—because they don’t have your experience. That’s normal. Stop trying to make their work yours. The best leaders create space for others to grow. Letting go isn’t losing control—it’s leading. Drop a 🙋♂️ in the comments if you relate! ·6-21If you think doing the work for your team is what makes you valuable, you’re kidding yourself. You’re not buried in execution because you’re “helpful.” You’re there because you’re afraid to let go. Maybe you don’t fully trust your team to deliver. Maybe you fear being blamed if something goes wrong. Maybe you think stepping back will make you less valuable. So you keep doing the work — because you know you can do it right. But when you lead this way, here’s what really happens: ❌ You end up overwhelmed — doing your job and theirs. ❌ You limit your team’s growth — they rely on you to think for them. ❌ You frustrate strong talent — high-performers don’t want to be micromanaged. If you want to lead, really lead, you have to create space for it. No one will do that for you. Start here: 1️⃣ Know what’s actually your job. Your job isn’t to fix everything. It’s to set direction, coach your team, and manage stakeholders. If you're doing their work, you’re not doing yours. 2️⃣ Stop solving every problem. When someone brings you an issue, don’t fix it. Ask: 💬 What’s your goal? 💬 Who needs to be involved? 💬 What’s your next step? If you’re answering those questions yourself, you're still in the weeds. 3️⃣ Be okay with B+ work. If you want a team that thinks for itself, give them room to try. Progress often looks messy. Let go of perfect — your job is to guide, not control. 4️⃣ Manage up, not just down. Senior leaders may want fast, flawless results. That pressure trickles down — and suddenly you’re doing everyone’s job. But leadership also means managing expectations: 💬 “Here’s what we can deliver and by when.” 💬 “We’re building capability — here’s how that looks.” Real leadership is about building a team that works without you. It’s not about doing more — it’s about stepping back, so others can step up. If you want to get out of the weeds, these shifts are where you start. ➡️ Follow @leadershipmel for more tips on how to be a highly valued leader #leadershiptok #ManagementTips #ExecutiveMindset #ManagingUp #CareerTok #DecisionMaking #ExecutivePresence #LeadershipGrowth #NewManager #LeadershipSkills #ExecutiveLeadership #WorkplaceConfidence #SuccessMindset #bealeader #corporatetok #SpeakWithConfidence #WorkplaceAdvice #LevelUpYourCareer #CorporateLeadership #ConfidenceTok

·6-19Here’s a tough truth most new leaders need to hear: Hard work alone doesn’t get you noticed anymore. You’ve stepped into a more sophisticated arena—now you need a more sophisticated strategy to grow your influence, impact, and career. 💡 Here are 4 things that make a valuable leader (the kind people talk about in rooms you’re not in yet): 1️⃣ Build your team’s capacity—not your to-do list. Your value isn’t in how much you execute. It’s in how well you support your team to deliver consistently high-impact results. Stop hoarding the work—start building people up. 2️⃣ Know how to build trust with anyone. Even the challenging personalities. Great leaders don’t wait for people to be “easy.” They lead through resistance, frustration, politics—and still create alignment. 3️⃣ Be top of mind with key stakeholders. Not just for being “reliable,” but for being someone who inspires results. That means showing up, being visible, and advocating for your work in a strategic, authentic way. Self-advocacy isn’t slimy—it’s how you grow. 4️⃣ Do all of this with calm, confident energy. Stressed, frantic leaders burn out and break trust. Valuable leaders bring clarity, presence, and solutions—even in the messiest moments. 🔁 Final thought: You’ll never see a senior leader grinding alone in a corner. They’re not doing more—they’re doing differently. If you want to play at that level, these 4 shifts are your playbook. 👉 Comment READY to book your free strategy session to see if executive coaching is right for you. ➡️ Follow @leadershipmel for more tips on how to be a high-impact leader #leadershiptok #ManagementTips #ExecutiveMindset #ManagingUp #CareerTok #DecisionMaking #ExecutivePresence #LeadershipGrowth #NewManager #LeadershipSkills #ExecutiveLeadership #WorkplaceConfidence #SuccessMindset #bealeader #corporatetok #SpeakWithConfidence #WorkplaceAdvice #LevelUpYourCareer #CorporateLeadership #ConfidenceTok

·6-13You want to be seen as strategic? Then your relationship with your boss has to evolve. Not from reporting to them — but from managing up to them. 👉 DM IMPACT to get my Free Leadership Playbook: 29 leadership shifts to transition from high-performing doer to high-impact leader. 💡 The most respected leaders don’t just lead their direct reports. They lead up the chain too. Here’s how to help your boss support you — without looking needy: 1️⃣ Tell them where their support can unblock momentum. Instead of flagging problems and waiting… name the support that would make a difference. Try: “If you can help clarify priorities with Finance, we can move faster on implementation.” 2️⃣ Suggest how they can champion the team’s work with others. Make it easy for them to give visibility. Try: “This one-pager summarizes what we achieved last quarter — you could use it in next week’s SLT meeting.” 3️⃣ Offer a quick update they can share. Give them crisp, ready-to-go language that keeps your work top of mind with their peers. Try: “Here’s a 2-line summary of the project status you could mention in your update to the COO.” 🧭 Influencing up isn’t political — it’s strategic. It shows you’re not just focused on your lane… You’re thinking about how your work moves across the org.
