Minutes before amputation.. Each night before my amputation I would “unlock a new fear”. They usually came from really bad dreams, or restless nights of my mind going all directions. One of the fears I unlocked was getting the final nerve block in my leg. I knew it was the last real feeling I’d ever feel with my foot, the last time I could touch my toes and feel my ankle. One of the last things I would experience with that part of my body. The nerve block was a harsh slap of grief and sadness over the situation I had to be in, and the decision I had to follow through with. In that moment I felt just overwhelming sadness and heartbreak.
