Spot: Sharman’s Proper Pies, at 1972 Danforth Ave, is a fun story. I grew up watching the owner as a soccer analyst on The Score and Sportsnet, and had no clue he had started a pie shop as well! Cool mix of British & Canadian offerings, mostly frozen but with a rotating selection available fresh in-store. Call a day or two in advance if you want to ensure you can get a hot tourtiere or just buy & bake at home. A Japanese restaurant since 1984 that does not get nearly the love it deserves on social media. The kindest people, with beautiful booth and Zashiki seating options in an intimate setting. Fish from Japan comes in 3x a week. Well, Tojo actually called it the Inside-Out roll and today, the Tojo maki. He thinks that maybe, as Japanese media caught wind of his creation, they incorrectly associated this West Coast North American dish with its most famous region - California. Others think Crab + Avocado = CA = California, while others think its as simple as avocados = California. We may never know! The spot: Sushi on Bloor, a beloved value sushi spot in Toronto. The world is sleeping on South Africa 🇿🇦❤️ the full bucketlist ⬇️ We just got back and I think EVERYBODY should put this country on their bucketlist. We only covered Cape Town, Garden Route and the Winelands but that was enough to be blown away by the natural beauty, friendly people and wine. I would categorize the food scene as more interesting, unique and experiential than straight up consistently great bites. During our time there, I did my best to explore the many unique cuisines of South Africa - Cape Malay, Durban style Indian, Xhosa, Afrikaner and more. You’ll see that reflected in my top 10! Here’s the list ⬇️ 1) Babylonstoren, Franschoek - dry aged chianina steak and corn risotto at one of their restaurants, Babel 2) De Vette Mossel, Mossel Bay - the spicy mussel meat on potbread, and really the whole experience 3) Seven Colours Eatery, Cape Town - samp & beans, beef stew and dombolo 4) La Petite Colombe, Franschoek - really cool tasting menu experience, perhaps no lifechanging bites but many great ones 5) Belly of the Beast, Cape Town - chicken & shiitake skewer in cafe brulee & a few other tasting menu bites 6) JJs Indian Cuisine, Cape Town - Durban style lamb curry 7) Fernkloof Nature Reserve, Knysna - buffet including the best malva pudding we had 8)Rand’s, Cape Town - pap with chakalaka and shisa nyama (bbq) meats at the club! 9) Rolandale, Swellendam - cheese, bacon & egg roosterkoek 10) Biesmiellah, Cape Town - bobotie P.S. This spot is Wanaag, located in Toronto’s East End at 224 Parliament St. For those that don’t know, Toronto is home to one of the world’s largest Somali diaspora communities. Yet, I don’t think most folks that live here have given the cuisine a try. Let’s change that!
