Video: FG pegs minimum admission age at 16 The Federal Government has officially established 16 years as the minimum age requirement for admission into all tertiary institutions in Nigeria. In a landmark announcement during the opening session of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) Policy Meeting held in Abuja on Tuesday, the Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, emphasised the government’s firm stance on the issue, which has sparked widespread debate in recent years. He stated, “The issue of age at entry into tertiary institutions has generated much debate, but our position is clear. The entry age for admission into tertiary institution is now officially pegged at 16 years.” Previously, the minimum entry age was set at 18 years, a policy that was slated to take effect in this year’s admission exercise. However, Alausa said after careful consideration, the FG has revised this age downward to better align with students’ cognitive and academic readiness. He explained, “This policy decision reflects a balance between cognitive maturity and academic preparedness. Sixteen years of age as admission as the official age is not negotiable.” He further directed all tertiary institutions across the country to ensure strict compliance with the new age requirement, underscoring the government’s commitment to standardizing admission criteria nationwide. “Institutions are hereby directed to ensure strict compliance,” the Minister added. This policy shift is expected to have significant implications for the academic landscape in Nigeria, potentially allowing younger but academically prepared students earlier access to higher education opportunities. Stakeholders in the education sector are now gearing up to implement the directive ahead of the upcoming admission cycles. Follow us for more updates

·12h ago Video: Court slams N5m fine on Natasha over Facebook post A Federal High Court in Abuja on Friday found suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan guilty of contempt of court. Justice Nyanko held that by posting a satirical letter on her Facebook page on April 27 while the April 4 order subsisted, Natasha was in contempt of court. Justice Binta Nyako issued the ruling during proceedings in a suit filed by Akpoti-Uduaghan, who is challenging her suspension from the Senate. Before addressing the main case, the court considered a contempt application submitted by Senate President Godswill Akpabio. Akpabio claimed that a satirical Facebook post made by the senator breached a prior court order that prohibited all parties from making public or online comments regarding the case. In response, Akpoti-Uduaghan’s legal team contended that the post was unrelated to her suspension and instead dealt with separate allegations of sexual harassment involving Akpabio, who is the third respondent in the matter. Nonetheless, Justice Nyako determined that the post was indeed connected to the suspension case and constituted a breach of the court's directive. As a result, the court found Akpoti-Uduaghan in contempt and mandated that she publish a written apology within seven days in two national newspapers and on her Facebook page. Additionally, she was fined ₦5 million. Follow us for more updates

·4d ago Video: Datti Baba-Ahmed fears of Atiku’s ‘merciless spending’ primary election In a sharp political observation, Vice Presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the last general election, Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed has raised concerns about the nature of the upcoming primary election involving former Vice President Abubakar Atiku and former Minister Rotimi Amaechi. Speaking on the dynamics of party primary, Baba-Ahmed recalled the intense and ruthless style attributed to Atiku during past contests. “When the chiefs are down and it’s time for primaries, what type of primaries is Atiku going to do with an Amaechi? You know how Atiku does primaries, mercilessly. In Port Harcourt, I remember dollars flying,” Baba-Ahmed stated, vividly recalling the high-stakes and financially charged atmosphere of the Port Harcourt primaries. This statement comes amid growing political realignments as Amaechi has declared his readiness to join forces with Atiku and other opposition figures to challenge President Bola Tinubu’s administration in the 2027 elections, citing worsening economic hardship and governance failures. Atiku himself has accused the current government of weaponising poverty to suppress Nigerians, emphasising the need for a coalition to end such practices. Meanwhile, Amaechi has highlighted the urgency of addressing poverty and insecurity as central to Nigeria’s political future. Baba-Ahmed’s remarks underscore the fierce competition expected within party primaries, especially between powerful political figures like Atiku and Amaechi, whose rivalry and alliance dynamics could shape the opposition’s strategy ahead of the 2027 general elections.
