Name the last documentary that had you crying in the first few minutes? For me it was Poly Styrene: I Am a Cliche. The documentary tells the story of the woman who became Poly Styrene, a punk icon and beacon of light for those who felt they never quite fit in. After watching the film I reached out to the director Celeste Bell, who happens to be Poly (well, Marianne’s) daughter and I’m so grateful Celeste said yes to talking about life with Poly, both during her childhood and as an adult. In our conversation Celeste remarks that her relationship with her mum made her realise that sometimes it’s about us giving our parents grace - and I don’t think we really talk about that.
