Listen up airports and airline, you have to comply with the law!
The U.S. Air Carrier Access Act stipulates “the airline must return your assistive device to you in a timely manner, as close as possible to the door of the aircraft”. So why did I have to fight with six people for them to do their jobs? I’m not putting myself in danger at risk of injury because they dont know the law or to make things more conveninent for them.
The staff at JFK honestly thought that laughing, yelling and trying to bully me into submission was going to work. They had no idea who they were dealing with. We waited 45 minutes, most of that time fighting. And I ahouldnt have to disclose private medical information to get someone to treat me with some decency. I should not have to insist not to be interrupted or spoken over. Only after we pulled out the Department of Transportation’s website, told them to call the police, and got a disability rights lawyer on the phone, did they realize we were not moving under any circumstances. Eventually, they profusely apologized for their behavior and for the delay, but it never should’ve come to that.
