Aamjiwnaang artist Nico Williams started beading full time about 10 years ago.
He began by decorating surfaces with images and patterns.
Then, as his practice evolved, he learned to use the form to create three-dimensional sculptures, often replicating everyday objects like camping chairs or Provigo flyers to scale.
He was recently awarded the 2024 Sobey Art Award.
The $100,000 honour is the largest prize in Canadian contemporary art.

David Crowe graduated from Scott Collegiate with his number one fan, his grandma, cheering him on. He never imagined that moment would be possible, but credits her support and a dedication to his favourite sport for his success. Crowe grew up in foster care in British Columbia and started playing basketball when he moved to Regina at 11 years old, when his grandma Melody gained custody of him. He's already been accepted to Briercrest Christian Academy College and Seminary in the fall to attend their Junior Varsity Basketball Program and pursue a major in psychology, with high hopes of helping people through their own trauma.
