But when we listen just to defend, explain, or fix, we create disconnection instead of repair. So why do we struggle to listen? 🔹 Our brains default to problem-solving mode—we focus on proving our point rather than absorbing theirs. 🔹 We associate criticism with attack, so we prepare our defense before they’re even done talking. 🔹 We’re wired for self-protection—not always for curiosity. But here’s the thing: Most people don’t need to hear why you’re a good person. They need to feel heard. The Fix? Pause, Reflect, Respond. ✔ Pause – Slow your reaction. Make eye contact, nod, and take a breath before responding. Ask yourself: Am I about to react or actually respond? ✔ Reflect – Instead of defending, paraphrase what you heard: ➡ “It sounds like you felt dismissed when I didn’t respond—did I get that right?” ➡ “So you’re feeling frustrated because I didn’t check in—am I understanding you?” ✔ Respond – Now that they feel heard, you can express your side without defensiveness: ➡ “I didn’t realize it felt that way. I want to be more mindful of that.” ➡ “That wasn’t my intention, but I see how it upset you.” 💡 The goal isn’t to “win” the conversation—it’s to create a dialogue where both of you feel valued. When you practice active listening, you change the entire dynamic of your relationship. You go from talking at each other to actually understanding each other. It motivates repair, accountability, and growth. 🚫 Toxic shame tells us we are the problem. Instead of encouraging change, it makes us feel fundamentally flawed and unworthy of connection. Guilt says: “I violated my own values.” Shame says: “I violated the values of my community” 🔹 Why Some People Spiral in Shame Not everyone gets stuck in shame after making a mistake. Why? Because shame isn’t just about the present—it’s about the past. If love and approval were conditional, you likely internalized the belief that you have to be perfect to be accepted. If you were shamed for your emotions, you might now experience guilt even when you haven’t done anything wrong. Toxic shame doesn’t just make us feel bad—it prevents repair in relationships. Instead of taking responsibility for our actions, we collapse. We shut down. We withdraw, self-punish, or even lash out defensively to avoid feeling unworthy. 1️⃣ Recognize When Shame Is No Longer Useful Ask yourself: Is this guilt helping me change? Or is it just keeping me trapped in self-hatred? 2️⃣ Challenge Your Inner Critic Ask yourself: Would I judge someone else this harshly? ·2024-2-27Anger is never an emotion on its own 👇🏻 It’s a reaction to a deeper feeling. So the next time you’re angry at your partner, try asking yourself what the deeper feeling is. Once you’ve figured it out, express that to your partner. This will bypass the usual explosion of emotions, defenses and fights and (if your partner is emotionally mature enough) lead to compassion and willingness to work together towards a healthy solution. There is potential your partner isn’t able to do that and that’s okay, but then you’ll need to ask yourself if you’re okay being in a relationship that can’t grow towards healthy.
