Share this post with a friend who needs floating shelves!! DIY floating shelves don't have to be super complicated to build. For these shelves, we used 1x4s and 1x6s. Formulas to create custom sized shelves: Desired depth = D Desired width = W Board Thickness = B For any cuts with angles, the measurements reflect the longer side of the board Front = W, both sides cut at 45-degrees Side = D, one side cut at 45-degrees Top/Bottom = D - B by W - 2B Wall Support = W - 2B (this is the MAX width. We generally cut ours about 1/4 - 1" shorter - it doesn't have to be exact - so that it slides on easier. If you want a tight fit so that the final nails aren't needed, you can just follow the formula and make it the max width) Shelf Supports = D - B - 1.5" (this is the MAX length. Generally we make them 1/4" - 1/2" shorter to ensure that the shelf slides all the way on).
